Berlin, 16 July 2021 - The European Commission faces an important choice on its ability to protect the Union’s democratic values. While Viktor Orbán’s government continues to undermine human rights in Hungary, the country is due to receive 7 billion Euros from the Union’s recovery fund. At the same time, the recent new law that discriminates against the LGBTQIA+ community seems to have mobilized sizable majorities in the European Council and Parliament to finally act to stop the destabilization of Hungarian democracy and civil rights.

This raises the fundamental question whether the EU has the appropriate tools and powers to enforce its laws and values in a democratic and rights-based union. We would like to invite you to join a lunch debate with MEPs Anna Donáth (Momentum, Renew Europe) and Damian Boeselager (Volt Europa, Greens/EFA). The two speakers will present their thoughts on institutional shortcomings and address the role of the opposition in Hungary and the European Parliament. Their conversation will be followed by a Q&A session.
